Piloting Village Piped Water Supply |
|
The project is a pilot initiative to supply safe water to community people in Daragram, Saturai Upazilla under Manikgonj district. It follows a tripartite partnership approach where SDC/World Bank provides technical support, Masjid Council program cost and management support and the community reduced tariff for water. The project established a water treatment and supply plant with 240,000 liter per day water supply capacity; 314 families are receiving piped water supply with a target of supplying piped water to 513 families. |

Interfaith Response to HIV and AIDS Prevention, Care and Support |
The project aims to promote community sensitization and awareness on HIV and AIDS prevention, care and support through involving faith leaders particularly Imams. Under the project Imams are given training to better delivery necessary information in Juma Khutba on HIV and AIDS prevention and care and religious approach to combating the threat as well. 2000 Imams would be trained under the project in 3-year time. So far a training module and sermon guidelines was prepared, 855 religious leaders trained on HIV and AIDS sermon giving and around one million people received sermons through the mosques. Moreover, 5 talk-shows and 52 question and answer sessions on HIV and AIDS aired through TV with participation of different religious leaders. Thee program is supported by Family Health International/USAID. |

Mosque based Schooling Program for the Early Dropouts |
For various reasons many children cannot complete the five-year primary education cycle. In the existing primary education infrastructure there is no other alternative currently in place to address the education crisis of the dropouts. While the enrolment is scaling up regularly due to various interventions by government and non-government sectors, the incidence of dropout remains a major concern. The project captures the education need of the dropouts with flexible and special curriculum. Upon completion the course, most of them get reenrolled in mainstream education system. While mosque premise is used to hold classes, Imams invariable play the teaching role. Until now, 4000 dropout children became graduated from the program after completing grade three and re-entered the mainstream education system. Currently 3300 children are pursuing education under it. The learners are given education materials and uniforms free of cost. The program is supported by Muslim Aid UK. |

Integrated Development Education and Livelihoods (Ideal) Village Project |
With Zakat money the project strives to develop a model that facilitates transferring ownership of capital to the hardcore poor of the community. Being superior in concept and strategy to the customary micro-credit approach the project develops collective ownership of the ultra poor through forming groups over the resources. Masjid Council indeed as the mediator between the Zakat payers and the payees facilitates to ensure optimum use and perpetual benefit of the money. It also works for scaling up skills and efficiency of the people through various motivational and capacity building activities. Heart of the project is the integration of various interventions from skill development for income genration to behavior change to awareness building. 930 families currently are getting support under the project. Zakat Board of the Bangladesh Government and various other private sector business houses provide Zakat money as fund of the project. |

Abandoned Children Welfare Project |
|
Sometimes it is seen that newborn babies are left soon after their birth in hospitals or clinics or even incredibly it happens that the newborns are left abandoned in garbage bins. Masjid Council recognizing that life is a gift of Allah (swt) and every human being has the right to life undertook the Children Welfare Program (CWP) in order to provide opportunities such as accommodation, education, dress, healthcare etc. to the abandoned children to grow as good human beings. Currently 40 children are living in two CWP centers in and around the capital city of Dhaka. |

Open and Distance Learning Approach to Strengthening Development Initiatives trough Interfaith Responses |
With support from the Commonwealth of Learning and in coordination with Council for Interfaith Harmony, Bangladesh (CIH,BD), MACCA is undertaking a program to train and equip religious leaders from different faiths to complement ongoing development efforts of government and NGOs. By using self-instructional open and distance learning approach this program will address identified barriers by clarifying myths, misconceptions and popular beliefs about different religious concepts on development and equip religious leaders with necessary knowledge, skills and tools (e.g. sermon guidelines) so that they can facilitate development process and contribute to the achievement of behavioral and social development goals. |

Food Aid and Relief Program |
|
As a low riparian country Bangladesh is exposed to recurrent threats of flood. The country also experiences other forms of natural disasters. Thus, part from various development and advocacy and campaign interventions, Masjid Council stands by the affected people and supports them with food and rehabilitation assistance. Previously Muslim Aid UK and some benevolent individuals provided cash support to carryout relief programs which covered approximately 9000 families. |

Income Generation Program |
|
Poor and moderate poor people are facilitated with micro-finance support to start economic activity to increase income. The program runs in Chandir Char under Manikgonj district. |

Complementary Partnership Program for Development |
To provide faith-based complementary support to ongoing development agendas and initiatives of government and non-government organizations, MACCA develops and offers a faith based complementary partnership program for development. Through this program the trained religious leaders works as faith advocates to reduce barriers and to facilitate social mobilization and behavior change. It also develops various BCC materials to be used effectively at the grass root level incorporating Islam's motivation and support for various leading development organizations including BRAC. |

Special Programs |
|
Masjid Council undertakes some special programs based on needs and supports. One such program is organizing dowryless marriage initiative to facilitate marriage of poor girls in a way so that their dignity could be protected. Moreover, it provides financial help to new couples to ensure livelihood security.
In the face of country-wide bombing in August 2005 Masjid Council undertook massive campaign programs to counteract the threats of extremism. It engaged Islamic scholars on television and in mosques across the country to interpret stance of Islam on extremism. It distributed inscribing the verses of the holy Quran and Hadith 10, 00,000 posters across the country.
